A little something about Cupid

Valentines Day has come upon us and we are back to figuring out what to do or where to go. Some find themselves looking to find a way to fast forward through the whole day in its entirety. Those shopping or seeking the ideas of the ultimate Valentines Date and those with loves ones deployed or some who have not found that special someone.

A little history about Cupid. We all know Cupid as the winged child with the bow and arrow anxiously waiting to pierce the hearts of a special couple. Cupids’ arrow signifies desire, emotion and love. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros the son of Aphrodite, the Goddess of love and beauty. To the Romans he was Cupid and to his mother was Venus. The Story of Cupid and Psyche are like the story of Cinderella. Psyche was one of three sisters who the most beautiful of the kings daughters. She was so beautiful people started to disregard the worship of Venus, the goddess of love. This angered Venus, she told her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. Cupid set out to do as his mother wished but when he saw Psyche he could not follow through with his mothers wish. Cupid dropped the arrow meant for Psyche and pricked himself. Her parents had been told that she was meant to marry a monster, so the took her to the top of the mountain like an Oracle and explained. Psyche was taken care of by invisible servants and a husband who would visit her at night and she was told to never look at him. Psyche lived a beautiful life until her sister was allowed to visit. Psyche sister was so jealous she told Psyche she must look at this terrible monster and kill him for he was fattening her up to eat her. When Psyche went to kill him and saw her beautiful husband she couldn’t. This caused Cupid to awaken and looked at Psyche and what she might be doing and left and took everything with him. Psyche went looking for Cupid and was desperate to find him. She found her self at the foot of his mother Venus. Venus was still very angry so she set forth tasks for Psyche to do each much harder and more dangerous which she always passed. Cupid found out what was happening and asked Jupiter to make Venus stop torturing Psyche. Cupid and Psyche where once again reunited and Psyche was made a goddess.

Cupid did not go out looking for love but found love when it was unlikely. Be like Cupid go about your days and you’ll never know when you turn around you might be looking into the eyes of the person who you will spend the rest of your life with.

Now for this Valentines Day, there is always plenty to do even for those who dislike the day and all that it brings. We all do not have our Cupid or Psyche and some may or may not let us figure out what there is for all to do and make the best of this day that the Greek gods have us celebrating.

In 469 A.D., Pope Gelasius declared the February 14 the day of St. Valentine. It was said that the Roman emperor decided that soldiers would not be allowed to marry during the Third Century. St. Valentine was displeased with this declaration. This was when the story of Valentines Day that we know was started. St. Valentine was set on helping the military men in there unapproved weddings. St Valentine would help assist in marrying the couples. When he was found out he was put in prision and awaited hanging for his actions. While he was in prision it was said that he had fallen in love with the daughter of the man who inprisioned him. The day he was executed was February 14, he had left her one last letter and signed “from your Valentine.” Since then the signature St. Valentine had left for his love has been made said to be one of the most used signatures by all. The symbol that we know now is of cupid and his wings and arrows may not be the true St. Valentine but it is still the actions in which he gave his life for which is love. There are a number of stories of St. Valentines that have the same ending. A story of the day we give ourself to someone whole heartedly and remeber why they are in our life as wellas our heart.
